Originally, Ms West only dressed her pooch for protection, purchasing UV goggles and a lifejacket so they could kayak safely together, but now she’s dressed as a minion, a basketballer and a dinosaur.

“She has goggles because I take her kayaking and a lifejacket but that’s a protection thing and not just for looks and I’ve used socks on her as well because she gets bitten by bull ants,” she said.

“Karma actually likes getting dressed now because I’ve used her as a model for everything — the tuxes, a minion, a bee, a dinosaur, Pokemon, hoodies, basketball singlets — everything.

“She sits down and put her arms out waiting to be dressed.”

Bond University Professor Stephen Holden said the trend of dressing pets in costumes goes hand-in-hand with spending thousands on designer dogs and creating pet centric Instagram profiles.

“In biological terms, it’s called anthropomorphising or putting human feelings in the animal, assuming we know what they want and need,” Mr Holden said.

“I think because the dog has become a family member and sometimes is even replacing a child and that’s reflected in the fact that we’ll do a lot more for that animal in terms of care and spending money on fancy leashes and jackets and collars.
